The “World Forum Of Fisher Peoples” ( WFFP ) a global mass-based social movement representing small-scale fisher communities worldwide, announces it’s active participation in the “LAC Forum”, which commences on 1st of May 2026 in Georgetown, Guyana at Soma Hotel complex. The LAC Forum serves as a vital platform for dialogue, collaboration, and policy engagement on critical issues affecting the Latin America and Caribbean region, including sustainable development, environmental justice, food sovereignty, and the rights of marginalized communities. WFFP’s involvement underscores the organization’s commitment to ensuring that the perspectives and struggles of small-scale fisher peoples are heard in regional and international forums.
Small-scale fisheries play an essential role in global food security, livelihoods, and coastal ecosystem management, yet they often face threats from industrial fishing, climate change, habitat destruction, and exclusionary policies. By participating in the LAC Forum, WFFP aims to:
- Advocate for the rights and recognition of small-scale fisherfolk in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Promote food sovereignty and sustainable fishing practices rooted in the knowledge and traditions of fishing communities.
- Build alliances with regional civil society organizations, governments, and other stakeholders to advance pro-fisherfolk policies.
- Highlight the interconnected challenges of biodiversity loss, human rights, and economic justice in coastal and inland fisheries.
Participation in the LAC Forum represents a significant opportunity for WFFP to strengthen solidarity with fisher communities across Latin America and the Caribbean. It’s presence ensures that the voices of those who depend on the oceans and inland waters for their survival are central to discussions on sustainable development and environmental governance.
