Women’s Assembly at the 8th WFFP General Assembly: A Day of Reflection, Solidarity, and Action

The Women’s Assembly of the WFFP kicked off on November 14, 2024, in Brazil, marking the beginning of an important day of reflection, solidarity, and action. This session brought together fisherwomen from around the world to share their experiences, reflect on the challenges they face, and work toward solutions that would strengthen their roles as leaders in the fight for the rights of ocean, water, and fisher peoples.

The assembly began at 9:00 AM, with a warm and welcoming opening facilitated by Ravadee Presertcharunsok and Carmen Mannarino. Jesu Rethinam Christy opened the session with an introduction and invited participants to introduce themselves, sharing their names, countries, and the organizations they represented.

From 9:50 AM to 10:50 AM, the assembly delved into the specific challenges faced by fisherwomen. Nadine Nembhard and Christiana Saiti Louwa led this session,

The third session, from 11:00 AM to 11:50 AM, focused on generating solutions to the challenges identified earlier. Jesu Rethinam Christy facilitated the session, creating a dynamic space for debate and collaboration.

The final session of the morning, from 11:50 AM to 12:30 PM, was led by Josana Seraro Pinto. During this session, the women reflected on the key challenges they had discussed and the solutions that had been proposed. The group also took time to celebrate Fisherwomen’s Day on November 5th, recognizing the contributions and resilience of fisherwomen globally.

This session set a powerful precedent for the days ahead, highlighting the collective strength of fisherwomen as they united to tackle global challenges and shape a better future for their communities.
