Women in Fisheries:Navigating Spaces, Challenging Norms, Shaping the Future
*#5WeeksCampaign | Week 1: Gender Rights & Freedom from Violence*
From the shore to the sea, from the market to the home β *women in fisheries* hold together the web of life and labour that sustains coastal and inland communities. Yet, their work remains invisible, unacknowledged, and undervalued.
This photo story brings to light their strength, skill, and spirit β as fishers, divers, traders, processors, and leaders β who continue to *challenge patriarchy, navigate turbulent waters, and shape the future of fisheries*.
Through these frames, we celebrate their everyday resilience and call for recognition of women fishworkers as *equal rights-holders* in fisheries and governance.
πΈ By *Media Collective* β storytellers using creative media to document peopleβs struggles and hopes, building an alternative, grounded voice beyond mainstream narratives.
This work was made possible through the guidance and support of *fisher leaders and communities on the ground in Kerala, India*, whose strength and wisdom shaped every frame.
π This story also stands as a tribute to the late *Shifa, whose photographs carried deep empathy and honesty. Her lens captured life from the ground β from womenβs labour and resilience to the quiet strength of communities. **Her vision, commitment, and politics have been immortalised through these stunning images.*
