The 8th General Assembly of the World Forum of Fishers People (WFFP) opened on November 15, 2024, in Brazil, marking a pivotal moment in the global struggle for the rights of fishers and their communities. Hosted by MPP, the assembly brought together hundreds of delegates, activists, and allies from across the globe to discuss and strategize on the future of fisheries, food sovereignty, and the fight against the global exploitation of oceans and fisheries
The opening ceremony was filled with warmth and solidarity. Josana Costa, a leader from the MPP, welcomed the assembly with a heartfelt message, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration.
Herman Kumara, a founding member of WFFP with 26 years of dedication to the cause, addressed the assembly with a powerful message about the history and future of the fisherfolk movement. Herman acknowledged the significant hurdles faced by the global fisherfolk community but celebrated the collective achievements that have brought them to this moment. Reflecting on the WFFP’s efforts to bring the Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) Guidelines to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), he urged delegates to remember that the battle for fisherfolk rights is ongoing, with new challenges like the Blue Economy and harmful aquaculture practices threatening their communities.
He also spoke about the growing influence of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other global institutions that marginalize the voices of small-scale fishers, highlighting the need for a firm stance against policies that promote corporate agendas at the expense of livelihoods and ecosystems. “The future is in our hands,” Herman declared, urging participants to continue fighting for their rights, sovereignty, and sustainable solutions.
A poignant moment during the opening ceremony was the recognition of Naseegh Jaffer from South Africa, who received the inaugural WFFP Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades of service to the fisherfolk movement. Naseegh’s work, including his pivotal role in the creation of the SSF Guidelines, was celebrated by WFFP leaders and allies alike. His activism and mentorship were highlighted by Christiana Louwa, the treasurer of WFFP, and Carsten (official technical advisor), who shared heartfelt stories of Naseegh’s contributions, wisdom, and guidance in shaping the movement’s success.
The opening speeches set the stage for a week of critical discussions, with Douda, WFFP co-chair, calling on participants to engage actively in the coming days of deliberations. “We are here to build solidarity, share experiences, and develop strategies for the future of our movement,” Douda said. The assembly’s focus will be on three key themes: Ocean Grabbing, the Climate Crisis, and Food Sovereignty, all critical issues that require urgent action and collective political resolve.
