The 8th General Assembly in Brazil: Addressing Ocean Grabbing

The Ocean Grabbing session , held under GA8 in Brazil on November 17, 2024, was a pivotal gathering where global environmental, social, and economic challenges were discussed. This year’s event featured important discussions on issues like ocean grabbing, the impact of extractivism (including oil, gas, and mining), and the evolving processes of governance aimed at addressing these critical concerns. With a focus on collective responsibility, sustainability, and justice, the assembly brought together voices from diverse regions.

One of the most moving and symbolic moments of the 8th General Assembly was Ocean Grabbing Day, a day to reflect on the environmental injustices impacting both land and sea. The day began with a Mystica organized by Mystica Africa & Europe to honor the Palestinian struggle and commemorate those who have lost their lives due to ongoing conflicts.

Following the Mystica, the assembly turned to the complex issue of extractivism, with a special focus on oil, gas, and mining industries. Facilitated by Joana Franco from Brazil, the session tackled the critical environmental and social consequences of resource extraction, particularly in regions rich in natural resources.

Another crucial aspect of the 8th General Assembly was the discussion on governance in addressing global environmental issues. Facilitated by Patrisha Faye Aldefolio from the Philippines, this session focused on the processes of governance and the spaces where decisions are made that affect the planet’s future.
