One of the strongest pillars of the peoples movements in India

On this Human Rights Day 2025 also being the last day of the 5 weeks campaign of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples, we pay tributes to
our senior Fisherwoman leader, Vedhavalli from Karaikal, Pondicherry, India

One of the strongest pillars of the peoples movements in the region.
She was central to the women’s movement. She played a crucial role in the campaign against shrimp industries (CASI) in the region and anchored her perspectives in the fact that fishing and all the activities of coastal communities are our way of life and can not be boxed into a profit making venture by any industry.

A leader whose vision for the struggle for the rights of the fisher peoples has been recognized at the local national and international levels..it is important to highlight a few achievements.

She was awarded the Com. P.Christy memorial award at the first ever India Fisherwomen Assembly 2024 held in Trivandrum, Kerala at the Father Thomas Kocherry Research Centre.

On international women’s day 2025 she received an award from the women and child welfare department, Puducherry and Mission Shakti.

Read more about her life and work through an interview of hers shared here.
