The Global Youth Exchange Training Program of WFFP ,2025 successfully brought together 48 young fisher leaders from 17 countries for an immersive five-day training in Negombo, Sri Lanka, from March 11 to March 15, 2025. This international initiative aimed to strengthen youth leadership, enhance knowledge-sharing, and build a global network of young advocates for small-scale fishers’ rights.The program featured a series of interactive sessions focusing on key issues affecting fisher communities worldwide. These sessions were led by experienced fisher movement leaders and experts, including Herman Kumara (General Secretary, WFFP), Maira Netto, Carsten Pedersen, Father Xavier Pinto, Vijayan Joseph, Jones Spartegus, Yifang, Paula Satizabal, Carmen, Arnau, and Yukari Sekine
One of the highlights of the program was a field visit to Negombo Lagoon, where participants analyzed mangrove forest ecosystems and engaged with local fisher communities. This visit provided hands-on exposure to the environmental and social challenges faced by traditional fishers, reinforcing the importance of sustainable practices and collective action.
The program also included a Cultural Night, where participants showcased traditional performances from their respective countries. This vibrant event celebrated global diversity, fostering stronger bonds among young fisher leaders and creating a sense of unity and solidarity.
The Global Youth Exchange Training Program 2025 was a significant milestone in empowering young fisher leaders to take action in their communities. By fostering cross-border collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and advocacy skills, this initiative contributes to building a stronger, more resilient movement for fishers worldwide.
