Global Family Farming Forum Kicks Off at FAO Headquarters:Herman Kumara, General Secretary of WFFP, Joins the Global Dialogue

Rome, Italy – October 16, 2024

The much-anticipated Global Family Farming Forum officially commenced today at the FAO headquarters in Rome, bringing together delegates, activists, and organizations from around the world to celebrate and reflect on the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF). The event, lasting until October 18, marks a significant milestone in the journey to advance family farming—a key pillar of food production in many regions across the globe.

Family farming plays an indispensable role in the global food system, providing the bulk of the world’s food supply while preserving traditional knowledge, sustainable agricultural practices, and biodiversity. As the forum unfolds, members of the International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty (IPC) are working diligently to advocate for the implementation of national policies that uphold peasant agroecology and food sovereignty approaches to family farming.

Among the prominent voices at the forum is Herman Kumara, General Secretary of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP). Kumara and other WFFP delegates are using this international platform to highlight the crucial intersection between family farming and small-scale fisheries, advocating for inclusive policies that protect the rights of smallholder farmers, fishers, and rural communities. Kumara emphasized the need for national plans to be aligned with the realities and needs of those who are most vulnerable yet contribute so much to food security and environmental sustainability.

As the Global Family Farming Forum continues, the collective efforts of the participants will lay the groundwork for a stronger commitment to family farming, peasant rights, and sustainable food production systems. The work happening within this forum—and through complementary spaces like the CSIPM—reinforces the idea that another world is not just possible but actively being built by those who believe in food sovereignty, sustainability, and justice.
