2nd SSF Summit 2024 Kicks Off at FAO Headquarters in Rome

On Friday, July 5, 2024, the 2nd SSF Summit 2024 commenced at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, bringing together up to 300 participants. These include representatives from small-scale fisheries (SSF) organizations and movements, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and government bodies.

This year’s theme celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The summit aims to advance priority actions for the sustainability of small-scale fisheries.

Nadine Nembhard, Co-Chair of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP), delivered the welcome speech, setting a positive tone for the event. Key figures attending the summit include Herman Kumara, National Convener of the National Fisheries Solidarity Movement (NAFSO) and General Secretary of WFFP; Josana Pinto from Movimento dos Pescadores e Pescadoras Artesanais (MPP), Brazil; Carmen Mannario from Masifundise, South Africa;, Azril Omar from JARING, Malaysia  and Jesu Rethinam from the National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF), India. These individuals, also serving as Coordinating Committee members of WFFP, represent the collective voice and aspirations of small-scale fisheries communities worldwide.

The 2nd SSF Summit 2024 promises to be a significant milestone in the global effort to ensure sustainable practices in small-scale fisheries, reinforcing their crucial role in food security and poverty eradication
